Irma's Art
Let the plant lady guide you
I’ve been drawing since I was a child –and painted many things in different mediums; oil, acrylic -the easiest to me because it dries fast, and now I’m starting to do watercolors. What I like about watercolors is that it is so moody but very delicate.
I like people’s eyes and faces, although I’m not very good at it. I keep erasing them and doing them again. I also like things with lines that create movement in a particular scene. The juxtaposition of objects and the lines they create is attractive to me. You can see that more in my photography.
Nature is a source of inspiration to me because everything is so perfectly made. I don’t see mistakes in nature. Like when you look at a plant and you see the stem and the leaves, some of them frayed, all of it is the way it should be. It is perfect with all of its imperfections. I also express my creativity in gardening. That’s also what I like in Van Gogh and Monet; how they see and connect with nature. That’s so inspiring to me. A lot of Van Gogh’s works are landscapes, the fields, the trees, and his use of intense color. That’s so pretty.
I’ve been to Rome and France, and I’ve seen a lot of great art. I saw many of Van Gogh’s paintings at the D’orsay. In the Louvre, I saw the Monalisa amongst many others. Very impressive, but didn’t expect it to be so small. Rome was more sculptural and architectural. In contrast, Paris exhibited more paintings and felt more international. As a whole, Europe is different. Wherever you turn, there’s art. In Rome, ancient ruins are everywhere. Paris is like walking through a time capsule where everything appears to be art, even the way they present a sandwich to you. Croque Monsieur anyone? Here in America, we don’t have the same exposure and connection to art. You have to go looking for it in museums, to find it and experience it. We’re more cut off from it.
Growing up, I had a lot of exposure to art and that increases your creativity. There were family members that were artists. My great uncle would bring his paintings to our house to show them to us. My mom used to draw for me also. Another family member in DR was a famous artist and we would visit her house and be surrounded by beautiful paintings and sculptures. All that exposure stays with you. Eventually, I took art classes at New York University and a couple of other places here and there. I also have a B.A. in sociology from NYU.
